Lysine

Lysine (symbol: Lys or K) is one of the twenty essential amino acids of living cells. Lysine is an α-amino acid used in protein biosynthesis and contains an α-amino group (which is protonated under biological conditions to −NH3+), an α-carboxylic acid group (which loses a proton under biological conditions to −COO−), and a lysyl side chain (CH2)4NH2)) and is classified as an aliphatic amino acid, charged at physiological and alkaline pH. Lysine is encoded by the codons AAA and AAG.
