SMC booster relay is a pneumatic device used in pneumatic control loops (control valves) that increases the volume of air or gas entering pneumatic actuators, thereby making a control valve operate faster.
On this page, we will introduce SMC Japan’s booster relays and introduce their technical specifications and features.

Volume Booster Function
As mentioned above, the SMC volume booster is one of the accessories of pneumatic control valves, which is used to increase and enhance the speed of control valve operation.
Since the air capacity that comes out of a positioner and goes into an actuator is limited and the flow will not be very high, the actuator will open and close the valve very slowly and the travel of the actuator will be very delayed.
The booster relay stores the air in a compressed form and sends the air to the actuator with a high flow when needed. This allows the air needed for the actuator to operate quickly and the valve to operate more quickly. (Open or close)
This issue will be more pronounced in cases where the valve size or actuator size is large and the valve requires a lot of torque to open and close. In these cases, a device called a volume booster or booster relay is used, which will increase the speed of movement (stroke) of the control valve.
Technical specifications of SMC volume booster
As you can see in the figure below, an SMC volume booster has 3 input and output ports. One port for the air input signal from the positioner, one port for supplying air to the precision instrument from the regulator, and one port for the air output signal and its entry into the actuator in the control valve.
Below is the correct way to install the SMC booster relay on spring return and double act actuators:
