Pneumatic systems consist of various parts, including solenoid valves. A solenoid valve is an electromechanical valve that is usually used to control the flow of liquid or gas. There are different types of solenoid valves, but their main types are either pilot or direct-operated. Unidirectional solenoid valves use an electromagnetic coil to attract a moving core that is connected to a diaphragm or piston that affects the opening and closing of the valve. Two-way valves are on/off valves for fluid separation and can be normally closed (NC) or normally open (NO) when de-energized. Two-way valves often operate with only one direction of flow and this is clearly marked, although two-way double-acting valves can be supplied if required.
How Solenoid Valves Work
A solenoid valve works by controlling the flow of liquids or gases in a positive, fully closed or fully open position. They are often used to replace manual valves or for remote control. The operation of a solenoid valve involves opening or closing an orifice in the valve body that allows or prevents flow through the valve. A piston opens or closes the orifice by moving up or down inside a sleeve tube by energizing the coil.
Solenoid valves consist of a coil, piston, and sleeve assembly. In normally closed valves, a piston return spring holds the piston against the orifice, preventing flow. When the solenoid coil is energized, the resulting magnetic field lifts the piston, allowing flow. When the solenoid coil is energized in a normally open valve, the piston closes the orifice, which in turn prevents flow.
